The first traffic light on the highways was used in London in 1868 with only green and red colors. These lamps were burned with gas and could rotate around their axis. But one year later, a traffic police officer was injured and these traffic lights were removed with the explosion.
Over time, the proliferation of cars in streets, that is, the increase in traffic, increased the need for traffic lights. In the early days, the application of traffic lights on the railways was taken as an example, but this system was inadequate on roads because there were no intersections on the railways.
First electric auto traffic lamp, In 1923, Garrett Morgan, who was also a prominent gas masker, patented the first electric automatic traffic light in America. The lamp was put into Cleveland.
Why are the traffic lights red, yellow and green?
In 1830 the green light was used for “warning”, the white light for “late” and the red light for “rail”. But the white lamps were mixed with other lamps around. When the red lenses that gave the “stop” signal also fell (traffic lights did not have the technology today, of course), the light was whitening. Because of this, those white lights were perceived as a “late” signal and the accidents came to fruition. For these reasons the colors of the traffic lights changed. Green “late”, yellow “warning” warning was accepted.
There are comments that red has been chosen as a “stop” for many cultures for many years because of its blood color, and vibrate as a “warning” signal because of its vibrating color, which is remarkable. In this case, it is used as a “late” signal because it is a trusting color of green, and a comment can also be made. Though there is no reason to choose the colors of the traffic lights, historically this has progressed in this way.
